A land full of temples, narrow lanes boasting ample cheer, and a few moments of tranquillity that encompass you and your dears; Vrindavan and Mathura have an aura that beckons you to come back to visit this holy land and immerse yourself in the service of the Lord. With a plethora of temples to see, one of the best temples of Vrindavan is the Radha Gokulananda Temple.

There is a piece of the Lord in every nook and cranny Vrindavan from a history that defines time itself.

History of Radha Gokulananda Temple

The original deity of Gokulananda was worshipped at Radha Kunda by Viswanath Cakravarti. During his stay in Vrindavan, he was welcomed by Lokanath Goswami. When the original Temple of Radha-Vinoda fell apart, he moved the Gokulananda deity to today’s. In this beautiful little haven, Lokanath Goswami sang melodious Bhajans in the name of the Lord.

Thus, you will find both the deities- Lokanath Goswami and Radha-Vinoda worshipped with intense fervour right here.

#Trivia: Another interesting fact is that the Gokulananda Shila was gifted to Raghunath Dasa Goswami by Lord Chaitanya. It bears the sacred thumbprint of Lord Chaitanya. The Shila holds an exceptional place in the temple because of its historical significance.

Besides seeking blessings from Gokulananda and Radha-Vinoda, you also get an opportunity to visit the samadhis of the famous Goswamis of Vrindavan.

Inside the main temple, you will see the small Radha-Vinoda deities of Lokanath Goswami and more significant deities of Vijaya Govinda belonging to Sri Baladeva Vidyabhushan and Radha Gokulananda deities of Sri Viswanath Cakravarti. The small deity in front of Gokulananda and the deity of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was worshipped by Sri Narottama Dasa Thakur.

They were worshipped alone in their own separate temples; however, when the old temples began to fall apart, Viswanath Cakravarti arranged to have them placed under one big temple ‘The Radha Gokulananda Temple of Vrindavan.’

#Trivia: The deity of Radharani was never part of the original setup. It was made by Jahnava Devi in Jagannath Puri and installed next to the Radha-Vinoda deity. After falling apart, the original Radha-Vinoda deity was shifted to the Gokulananda temple in Jaipur.

The eight deities present here represent the emotions and attachments of the Goswamis and Viswanath Cakravarti and their dedication towards Lord Krishna. Their undying faith in the Lord’s ways and the path to righteousness has made this temple one of the most popular temples of Vrindavan.

Architecture of Gokulananda Temple Vrindavan

The temple is not extravagant like several other temples of Vrindavan; however, it holds few of the most beautifully carved deities. The primary premise of the temple represents typical Indian and Rajasthani architecture with heavy wooden doors, marble inlays and pillars, and fine craftsmanship. While the temple is not significant, the beauty it reflects is unbeatable.

Almost all the deities are carved in black stone with intricately painted faces that accentuate the look and feel of the main temple area. On the other hand, Radharani is carved in brass (metal) with beautiful features and marble cows and peacocks.
