On the outskirts of Vrindavan lies the Akshaya Patra Temple. It is a revered Hindu shrine built and maintained by ISKCON Bangalore.

ISKCON Akshaya Patra Temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna and Srimati Radharani, and its real name is Radha Vrindavan Chandra Temple. But because of the large kitchen set up by the Akshaya Patra Foundation, it became better known as Akshaya Patra Temple Vrindavan.

Akshaya Patra Foundation provides meals to the children studying in the schools nearby. It cooks and feeds thousands of school children daily.

The temple stands on a vast spread of open land, with greenery all around. Another temple – Vrindavan Chandrodaya Mandir, is also built near this Radha Vrindavan Chandra Mandir. It, too, has been planned by ISKCON Bangalore, to be built to the height of about 700 feet.

History of Akshaya Patra Temple Vrindavan

Akshaya Patra Temple, or Radha Vrindavan Chandra Temple, was built to recognise the devotion of Maharaj Radha Chandra Swami. He was a Christian who was born in 1948, in a small town in America.

One day, he ran away to visit India. He studied literature and English in India. He came to know about Lord Krishna, studied about him and became his devotee. Then, he came to Vrindavan with other Krishna devotees and devoted his whole life to spread awareness about Lord Krishna.

So, Srila Bhaktipada, during his visit, started the construction of this temple.

Things to do at Akshaya Patra Temple

The statues of Radha and Krishna are among the main attractions of Akshaya Patra Temple Vrindavan, apart from the temple itself. They are established on the first floor, and they are easily accessible with staircases. These white statues are carved out of stone and are kept in the golden Mandapa.

The main hall, the golden Mandapa, is the most attractive area of Akshaya Patra Temple Vrindavan. It is surrounded by an arch-like structure. And on the doors, Garuda and Hanuman figurines are carved.

The temple is a semi-spherical structure, built to look like a blooming lotus. And the domed structure rises to a height of around 25 feet.

This beautiful Radha Vrindavan Chandra Temple is known not only for its spiritual significance but also for the social activities performed here. Akshaya Patra Foundation has built a large kitchen at the back of the temple. They cook and serve mid-day meals to the kids studying in the nearby schools of Vrindavan.

You can also experience the fervour of many festive celebrations in the temple. Janmashtami, Radhashtami and Diwali are among the major festivals celebrated here. Holi is also celebrated with full vigour.

During such festive occasions, the entire temple is decorated with flowers, and the deities are decked with new clothes, ornaments and garlands.

The fragrance of incense rises in the environment, filling you with devotion towards the Lord. Then, you can hear the sounds of kartals and mridangas everywhere, along with the chants of Hare Rama Hare Krishna. Various food items are also prepared to be offered to the Lord. These are later distributed as prasadam among the devotees and the visitors.
