History of Government Museum Mathura

The museum’s history dates back to 1874, the year of its founding by Sir FS Growse, the then collector of Mathura. Before its current name, the Government Museum was known as the Curzon Museum of Archaeology and further renamed the Archaeology Museum, Mathura.

To commemorate its glorious past and the 100th anniversary, the Government of India released a postage stamp on October 9, 1974. It is an octagonal-shaped edifice built entirely of red sandstone with exclusive Bodhi statues and hand chiselled sculptures lined around its sprawling lawns.

Importance of Government Museum Mathura

The entry fee is INR 5 for Indian Adults and INR 2 for Indian children. The fee for international tourists is INR 25. You have to pay an additional fee of INR 20 if you want to carry a camera. The museum is open from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm, Tuesday to Sunday. The museum is closed on Mondays.

The most unusual artefact at the Government Museum in Mathura is the headless figure of Kanishka dressed in a central Asian costume with enormous boots and a sword and sheath in both hands. Archaic mother goddesses, Sunga period plaques, and many motifs from the Kushana and Gupta periods are the terracotta items on display.
