Katyayani Shakti Peeth Mandir is among the 51 revered Shakti Peeths in Hindu religion. It is also one of the oldest temples in the area, built near Radhabagh in Vrindavan.

The temple is dedicated to Goddess Parvati, in her Katyayani form. As per the legends, her hair fell here when Lord Vishnu cut her dead body. Some people worship her as Goddess Uma here. Thus, the temple is also known as Uma Shakti Peeth or Uma Devi Mandir.

In Katyayani Shakti Peeth Vrindavan, the sword of the Devi, called Uchawal Chandrahaas, is also worshipped. Every year, especially during Navratri, the temple is flooded with pilgrims who come to pray to Goddess Katyayani and take her blessings.

Architecture of Katyayani Shakti Peeth Vrindavan

The entire temple is made of white marble. And big pillars, made with black stone, support the temple. You'll also find statues of two golden lions just next to the steps leading to the main yard. These lions represent the vahana of the goddess.

Legend of Katyayani Shakti Peeth

As per the legend, King Daksha organised a yajna, but didn’t invite his daughter Sati and Lord Shiva (her husband). Sati felt insulted and gave her life by jumping into the fire of the yajna. When Shiva knew, he picked up the dead body and roamed around, distraught.

Lord Vishnu, to bring back the sanctity of Shiva, cut the body of Sati into 51 pieces. And the ringlets of Sati’s hair fell here. So, this place became one of the Shakti Peeths and a shrine was built dedicated to Sati. She is also called Uma here. Thus, the temple is called Uma Devi Shakti Peeth.

Another legend associated with Uma Shakti Peeth Vrindavan is that worshipping Katyayani Devi gives girls their desired groom.

It’s said that gopikas of Braj (the area around Mathura-Vrindavan) wanted Lord Krishna as their husband. So, Vrinda Devi suggested them to worship Goddess Katyayani. The tradition still continues since then.

History of Katyayani Shakti Peeth Mandir

Katyayani Devi Shakti Peeth in Vrindavan was consecrated on a full moon day of Hindu month Magh. As per Gregorian calendar, it falls in February 1923.

A saint, Kesavanand Maharaj built it. He was an ardent devotee of Maa Katyayani. It’s said that he had a dream in which Katyayani Devi asked him to come to Vrindavan and build a temple. So, he came to Vrindavan and identified this place as the one where Sati’s hair fell. Then, he constructed the temple of Katyayani Devi here.

Kesavanand Maharaj also built an ashram, where he lived for the rest of his life.
