Gopeshwar Mahadev temple is one of the oldest and unique temples in Vrindavan, located near Vanshi Vat in the close vicinity of Yamuna river. The principal deity of the temple is Lord Shiva worshipped in the form of Gopeshwar (lingam) which is guised as a Gopi.
It is believed that Shri Gopeshwar lingam was established by the great grandson of Lord Krishna, Vrajanabha. It is one of the few temples dedicated to Lord Shiva in Vrindavan, where Lord Krishna’s presence dominates the minds of the people as well as the space in the holy city.
This temple signifies the confluence of masculine and feminine powers of nature.
History/Legend of Gopeshwar Mahadev Temple Vrindavan
As per the popular belief, Lord Krishna and Sri Radha Rani along with the gopis were performing Raas Leela on the night of Sharad Purnima, when Lord Shiva expressed his wish to be a part of the same to experience the bliss of Raas Leela.
However, Lord Shiva, being a male was not permitted to do so and was stopped by Vrinda Devi. Determined to participate, Lord Shiva started praying and meditating on Goddess Radha who gave him permission to join Raas Leela after getting induced into Sakhi Bhav.
Lord Shiva took a dip in the holy Yamuna river and emerged as a beautiful damsel, after which he was allowed into the Raas mandal. Being an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva himself, Lord Krishna recognised the female guise of him and named her Gopeshwar.
It is also believed that the lingam at the Gopeshwar temple was the one worshipped by the Brij Bhoomi gopis to attain Lord Krishna as their husband.
Things to do at the Gopeshwar Mahadev Mandir
In Srimad Bhagavata, Mahadev Shankar or Lord Shiva has been called the foremost Vaishnava. He and Goddess Parvati are always meditating on Lord Krishna’s leelas. The principal deity in this temple is worshipped as the Lord Shiva lingam in the morning and Gopeshwar Mahadev in the evening when it is dressed as a gopi. Holy Dip: You can take a dip in the holy Yamuna river near the temple. One can spend some time in solitude at the banks of the river.
Vanshi Vat: Around 200 metres from the Gopeshwar Mahadev Temple, one can visit the Vanshi Vat or MahaRaas Sthali. It is believed to be the place where Lord Krishna performed Raas Leela with Sri Radha Rani and gopis.
The large Banyan tree in the premises is supposed to be the same tree where idol of Radha Gopinath ji appeared which is currently in Jaipur, Rajasthan.
Gopeshwar Mahadev Temple Timings and Entry Fee
There is no entry fee to visit the Gopeshwar Mahadev Temple and is open for devotees with the onset of dawn.
The timings of the temple change depending on the seasons. During the winter season, the temple is open from 4:00 am to 12:00 pm and then from 4:00 pm to 8:30 pm. The Mangla Aarti timing is 4:00 am. During the summer season, the temple is open from 3:30 am to 11:30 pm and then from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The Mangla Aarti timing is 3:30 am.

Vrindavan experiences extreme weather conditions during Summer as well as winter months. Hence, the best time to visit Gopeshwar Mahadev Temple is from October to December and from February to April when you can enjoy the trip to the fullest.

The nearest airport is Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi which is around 164 km from the temple and the closest railway station is Mathura Junction (13 kms) which is connected to all the major cities in India.

- Be watchful of the monkeys as you might face some trouble from them. Carry your food and other belongings in a bag.
