Sacred escapades that have stood the test of time, Vrindavan and Mathura, the two most beloved cities of Lord Krishna, have a special place in every devotee's heart. Lined with different stories of the Lord, these cities beckon tourists to come and explore the ethereal beauty that defines the essence of devotion.

Keeping up with the tradition of gorgeous temples with a long legacy, Sri Radha Damodara Temple in Vrindavan tells the story of the manifestation of the Lord in three different forms.

Welcome to the pious Braj Bhoomi of Lord Krishna and the beginning of ISKCON.

About Thakur Sri Sri Radha Damodar Dev Ji Temple

One of the most popular Goswami temples of Vrindavan, the Radha Damodara Temple, is famous for its beautifully carved deities with intrinsic paintings covering Radha Damodara's entire body. Exclusively handcrafted by Srila Rupa Goswami at the behest and guidance of the Lord Himself, he gifted it to nephew and disciple, Srila Jiva Goswami to worship, in the late 15th century.

One of the holy sites that speak about the devotion of one individual towards his Lord, is a must-visit temple in Vrindavan, Mathura. This particular deity worship started in 1542 CE by Srila Jiva Goswami, and ever since then, the prayers and throngs of devotees continue to flow to the mesmerizing tunes of the Lord.

History and Importance of the Sri Sri Radha Damodara Dev Ji Temple

The most unique facet of the Radha Damodara altar is the 'Govardhan Shila,' which was given by Lord Krishan (Lord Krsna) to Shila Sanatana Goswami. The older brother, Srila Rupa Goswami used to dedicatedly carry out 'Govardhan Parikrama’ every day without fail.

#Trivia: One Govardhan Parikrama (circumambulation) is nearly 21kms. But Srila Sanatana Goswami used to do a far bigger Parikrama, roughly 32kms and continued this tradition until his old age.

Touched by his utter and complete devotion, Lord Krishna paid him a visit disguised as a boy and told him to stop doing this ‘parikrama.’ The Lord took a 'Giriraj Shila' and stood upon it and started playing his flute. The Shila started melting with his melodious tunes, and the Lord told Sanatana Goswami that from today onwards if you worship and go around this Shila, it is as good as completing the Giriraj or Govardhan Parikrama.

Besides the main deity of Sri Sri Radha Damodara, on his right side is Radha Vrindavan Chandra, which is the worshipful deity of Srila Krishnadas Kavidas Goswami. On the left side, we have Radha Madhava, the worshipful deity of Srila Jaidev Goswami, and Sri Radha Chailacikan deities belonging to Sri Bhugarbh Goswami.

#Trivia: The temple is also home to special samadhis of a few of the most notable Krishna poets and authors of the 15th and 16th centuries. Another interesting fact is that all ISKCON devotees are followers of Srila Rupa Goswami. He gave them the guidelines of devotional service towards mankind and composed the Nectar of devotion and bhakti.

Please note, this place is of foremost important for the devotees of ISKCON because of its unique history.

Architecture of Sri Sri Radha Damodara Dev Ji Temple

The temple exudes a rustic charm owing to its simple architecture with floral carvings on the temple walls. It is complete with mid-sized portraits of all six Goswamis and the 'Shri Damodara-ashtakam' elaborately narrated on one wall.

The main temple altar is replete with heavy silver work in the background. The gorgeous attires and the peace and serenity of all the Radha Damodara deities complete with exquisite carvings are a sight to behold.

Location of Radha Damodar Temple

It is located in the Seva Kunj area of Vrindavan and is near Radha Shyam Sunder and Radha Raman temples.

Srila Jiva Goswami personally purchased land at Seva Kunj in Vrindavan to build a temple and worship his beloved Lord Krishna.

#Trivia: When Aurangazeb invaded Vrindavan Dham in 1670, he planned to deface and destroy all the deities there. This is the reason all the Damodara deities were moved to a safe place in Jaipur, Rajasthan. They are prayed to date at their temple in Jaipur.

Best time to visit Radha Damodar Temple

The temple is open all year round; however, the best time to visit the temple is between October to March. The weather is cool and pleasant, making it easy for you to move around and enjoy the beauty even more.

The temple is open for darshan or prayers from 6.30 am to 12.30 pm and 5 pm to 9.30 pm in summer, and then from 7.30 am to 1 pm and 4.15 pm to 8.45 pm in winter.
